    Great blog! My dad worked for GM, first in the export / import division and later in Washington as a lobbiest, and his choice of company cars was always an Opel.

    He had a few Rekords and always spoke fondly of them. I don't remember them, but I do remember the series of Kadetts and Mantas he had.

    My first car was a Kadett station wagon and my first "sports car" was a GT. I have a soft spot for Opels.

    I never knew that this model, or any Opel for that matter, was imported to the US.

    Hi - Here in the US we got the Rekord, the Kadett, GT, Manta and 1900 (which was called the Ascona in Europe). They were sold through Buick dealerships. GM stopped selling Opels in the US in 1975.

    At one point, 1969, I believe, they were the second best selling import in the US, behind Volkswagen.

    The last Manta sold in the US had a fuel injected 1.9 liter engine and could hold its own with a US spec BMW 2002. If GM were smart they would have kept selling it here.
